Rustler Athletics Rounds Up 3 Championship Seasons in 2021!
"Rustler Sam to skedaddle from Golden West" Marla Jo Fisher, 2005
He’s a bowlegged old cowpoke with a branding iron and a ten-gallon hat. First, he lost his cigarette and stubble beard. And, soon, he’ll be out of a job. For 36 years, Rustler Sam has been the official mascot for Golden West College, designed and donated to the Huntington Beach college by the cartoonist who drew the popular comic strip “Tumbleweeds.”
...
The campus newspaper was once called the Branding Iron. Now it’s the more generic Western Sun.
Rustler Sam was created in an era when TV westerns were all the rage and movie cowboys had yet to be replaced by firefighters as the rescue heroes of choice. Students who admired the nationally syndicated Tumbleweeds comic strip character Sagebrush Sam wrote to its creator, Tom K. Ryan, in Muncie, Ind., in 1968 to ask if they could use it as their mascot. Ryan wrote back to say that he didn’t think Sagebrush Sam would work, but he drew them their very own cowpoke instead.
As payment, Ryan asked for an “extra large sweatshirt with emblem imprint when available,” a school pennant and pictures of the college. The original Rustler Sam had a beard and a cigarette drooping from his lips. In the 1990s, students concerned about the dangers of smoking sparked a redesign that gave Sam a shave and removed his smoke. He still holds a branding iron, which real rustlers used to change the brands on cattle they had stolen, and a holster on one hip."
“Watery fate may lan in store for mascot” Orange County Register, 2006
"Rustler Sam does boast a prestigious past: He was designed in 1968 by the cartoonist o the popular comic strip Tumbleweeds, Tom. K. Ryan, during the bygone days of the Western craze. Students from the college wrote Ryan asking if they could use one of his characters, Sagebrush Sam, as their mascot. Instead, Ryan drew them an entirely new character, asking for a school sweatshirt and pennant as payment. In the mid-ʻ90s Rustler Sam suffered his first setback when a suddenly health-conscious student body pushed a redesign that stripped him of his trademark cigarette. While they where at it, they made the cattle thief look a bit more reputable, by eliminating the stubble that adorned his face. The school likes the idea of marketing itself as a beach school, even though the ocean is miles away. Though students cannot view the waves from the school, they can certainly view them on the schoolʻs Web site. Its home page features numerous beach and ocean shots, including a breaking wave accompanied by the caption “Discover oceans of opportunity!” One student, Opal McClane, scored the idea that the school needed an ocean mascot. “I donʻt see why it has to be an ocean name; we canʻt even see the water from here!” When told of the idea of a shark representing the school as the “wave rustler” a group of students hanging out by a coffee cart groaned. “Man, thatʻs bad!” [Nick] Nguyen said.

From the daughter of T.K. Ryan, Diane Ryan Finn to the "Save Rustler Sam" Group--
"First of all I think it’s wonderful that you were so involved in your community and GWC. People like you are so inspiring!! I hate that this group is trying to turn this harmless character and his humor into a subject of racism/hate. My dad, rest his sweet soul, would never have had any intention for Rustler Sam to be anything but a good representative/mascot for your school. He wasn’t about that.
Unfortunately you may be up against a tough fight. I agree that this younger generation has lost their humor !! To me we should be proud of our past it and not try to cancel it. I certainly hate to see this and I know my dad would too. After all Rustler Sam is supposed to be all about justice and peace. Right?
I’m not sure I can help but if there’s anything I can do I’d be happy to.
Let me know how things go.
Diane"

"Golden West College in Huntington Beach will open its doors to 2,000 students on September 12. Although there may be some minor construction jobs going on, classes will begin on that date and the college will be ready for business. In impressive ceremonies recently, the cornerstone was laid on a permanent site at the base of the flagpole. In a metal casket with the stone were place items of historic interest dealing with the college's beginnings. Masonic lodges from Westminister, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach and Huntington Beach conducted the ceremonies. The second college in the Orange Coast Junior College District, Golden West will be founded upon innovation. From its unique construction--clip-in walls which can be moved to make the floor plans completely flexible--to audio-tutorial teaching methods, it will be a college which will attract the attention of the educational world.Dr. R. Dudley Boyce, Golden West president, said that other innovative features of Golden West will include teacher-centered counseling programs on division basis, and a study resource center as an extension of the traditional library. At the cornerstone laying ceremonies, Dr. Norman E. Watson, district superintendent, termed Golden West "a bright new star on the horizon, a college which will be in the forefront of California education." Golden West will have an extensive evening program in its first year. An estimated 3,000-4,000 students will enroll in the evening courses, in everything from art and English to theater and technology courses. For sports fans, the new college will offer a full athletic program and will be a regular member of the Eastern Conference, along with Orange Coast College. First football game for the Rustlers is Sept. 17, when they travel to Grossmont in a non-conference tuneup."
